The Great Thing About Poker? "Anyone Can Learn To Win”

October 28, 2020 Matthew PittCheck out this interview with Canadian PLO grinder David Arnold.

David Arnold is a player you will have battled with if you ever play at Run It Once Poker. You won’t know it’s him because Run It Once employs a Table Alias to keep players anonymous and to protect them from predatory behavior. Not that Arnold is bothered much about that because he’s a regular winner on the site. poker88 asia

Run It Once Poker leadRboards

Arnold has excelled in the Run It Once leadeRboards over the past few months. Winning the PLO20 and PLO50 races a few times and regularly featuring in the top three places, padding his bankroll with free cash and even more Legends rewards.

The 31-year-old from the awesomely named Moose Jaw in Saskatchewan, Canada, which is, apparently, home to the world’s largest moose statue known as Mac the Moose, has played poker for more than 15 years. His Uncle Dave and father Kevin introduced him to poker during a home game.

A few years later, when he was old enough to play online poker, he did exactly that, joining Full Tilt Poker. Arnold started at NL50 and quickly progressed to NL400.

“Multi-tabling for me was always easy for some reason. I started out playing four tables and quickly got to 15 tables at once. That was the most invaluable skill as it allowed me to make more money faster, especially back then when the games were very good.”

Making The Switch To Pot-Limit OmahaDavid Arnold in action

He switched to Pot-Limit Omaha in 2014 despite all of his success in the Hold’em games. This is because he was aiming to hit the now-defunct Supernova Elite VIP level at PokerStars. PLO players earn more points than NLHE players per hand.

“In 2015, I reached Supernova Elite playing mainly PLO200. After this, I rarely played no-limit hold’em as I just fell in love with PLO. I mean, who doesn’t love getting two more cards?”

More recently, it is Run It Once Poker where Arnold has spent a large percentage of his time grinding. The relatively new addition to the poker world is continually growing and evolving, doing so with its customers at the forefront of their thoughts. Why did Arnold swap the world’s busiest online poker site for Run It Once Poker?

Supporting His Poker Herophil Galfond is David Arnold's poker hero and founder of Run It Once Poker

“What first attracted me to Run It Once Poker was Phil Galfond. The guy was and still is one of my poker heroes. So when I heard he was creating a site, I knew it would be something special. The rake is structured in a way where you can win even at the lowest levels and build a bankroll, whereas on other sites this is almost completely impossible it seems. Especially with the leadeRboards, one is able to build a very nice bankroll on the site starting with almost nothing, which is great for poker.”

Indeed it is good for the game and should be commended.

Winning any leaderboard is no mean feat due to the intense grinding required. Arnold has never had an issue with putting in long hours at the poker table.

A Typical Day in the Life of a Grinder

“When you are used to driving a tractor for 16 hours a day, sometimes playing a little poker isn’t so tough!”

A typical leaderboard grinding day for Arnold starts at 7:00 a.m., have a shower, get dressed and check out what games are running. He’ll then commit to playing all day until the games completely break up. He then heads to the gym to blow off some steam, comes home, eats, and relaxes by watching some movies.

“Sometimes, it’s 12-hours of straight poker. If it’s a weekly leaderboard I do this for the first few days and hopefully, gain a good lead. If it’s a daily leaderboard, then it’s over in a single day. I enjoy playing both formats, some players prefer the daily ones more.”

Grinding for a prolonged period of time can be tough mentally and you can sometimes become your own worst enemy. We’ve spoken to leaderboard winners in the past who say it’s difficult to play your best poker when you have other players breathing down your neck and racking up points. There are hurdles to overcome if you want to be a leaderboard winner.

“As far as the biggest hurdles to get over when grinding leaderboards, I would say just try not to tilt as that can quickly ruin your sessions. Also, you may have to play heads-up or short-handed a lot, which can seem intimidating to some players, but it is so much more fun than playing at a full table.”

Hard Work Pays Off in the Long Run

Arnold admits that he’s not much of a student of the game in respect of reading books and analyzing hands, he prefers learning on the job, so to speak, gaining experience through playing the game. He has watched some PLO strategy videos by his hero Galfond on the Run It Once training site, which he highly recommends doing if you want to take your game to the next level. To succeed in poker, however, you need to be prepared to work hard.

“I don’t have an end goal in mind, maybe Las Vegas and the Mirage? The great thing about poker is that anyone can learn to win. Anyone can work hard, you just have to put in the work and it pays off in the long run.”

For the time being, Arnold plans to continue grinding the PLO20 and PLO50 cash game leadeRboards, but he doesn’t have any real poker-related goal in mind. If you want to be a leaderboard grinder, Arnold suggests you should also make sure you’re having fun and love playing poker. You should also plan your sleep around the times where the games are busier and don’t be afraid to play short-handed or even heads-up.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise after reading this interview that Arnold is a big fan of Run It Once Poker.

“If you’re considering trying out Run It Once Poker, I highly recommend it. The software is amazing with the dynamic avatars and the games themselves are great. It almost feels like you’re playing live poker. I’ve seen some plays that I haven’t seen since 2008, which is great for poker! It has a very friendly community and you can build a bankroll from the smallest stakes.”

Online Poker in Michigan: Who Will Be There from the Start?

October 27, 2020 Giovanni AngioniOnline Poker Michigan

With the first real money poker games expected to be only a few weeks away, PokerNews looked at the list of applicants for a gaming license in Michigan to understand what we can expect to see when the market opens. poker88 asia

The state of Michigan legalized online poker back in December 2019, when Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed the House Bill No. 4311.

The package, now referred to as Michigan's Lawful Internet Gaming Act, opened the state's door to online poker, online casino gambling, sports betting, and daily fantasy sports, putting the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) in control of all the operations.

Since then, almost 50 gambling operators applied for a license. While not all these companies are expected to launch an online poker site, the list of applicants gives us a good idea of what to expect for the upcoming Michigan poker market.

PokerStars MI: Yes PokerStars is expected to launch in Michigan on day one.

The world's largest online poker site is expected to start offering real money poker games in Michigan from day one.

The Stars Group inked a deal with the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians Gaming Authority back in January and it has been preparing the launch of real money poker, casino, and betting products since then.

While we expect the group to enter the sports betting and online casino arena with the FOXBet and FanDuel brands, we have no doubts that all their poker operations will be funneled through the upcoming PokerStars MI.

The PokerStars brand is already active in New Jersey and Pennsylvania through its PokerStars NJ and PokerStars PA websites.

partypoker MI: Yes partypoker will offer games in Michigan

The ongoing battle between PokerStars and partypoker for a leadership position in the U.S. poker market is not going to stop anytime soon, as partypoker will operate shoulder-to-shoulder with PokerStars also in Michigan.

To secure an early start in the state, Roar Digital (the company that runs partypoker's operations in the United States) signed a partnership agreement with the MGM Grand Detroit. We expect this to result in a product that will gain the 'party' brand, earning it a significant presence in both the poker and the casino markets in the process.

The launch of a partypoker MI product alongside PokerStars replicates the same scenario that we have seen New Jersey, where the two hold the biggest market shares and continue to battle for the acquisition of new players with massive online tournament series and promotions.

If New Jersey is any indication of how things could go in Michigan, it is safe to assume that ROAR/party will start their operations in the state with a series of aggressive acquisition campaigns that will try to put the brand ahead of PokerStars from the outset.

poker88 MI: No poker88 did not apply for a Michigan gambling license

The list of applicants to offer online poker games in the state of Michigan does not include poker88.

The Israel-based gaming giant does not appear to have entered into an agreement with any of the land-based casinos in the state and is therefore not expected to launch in Michigan in the immediate future.

The WSOP.com client will not be available in Michigan

Caesars Interactive Entertainment (CIE), the company that runs the WSOP.com poker site is also not on the list of those expected to get an early start in Michigan.

While the WSOP.com poker software might not be as popular or appreciated as those of PokerStars and partypoker, the absence of the WSOP.com brand in Michigan is one that players are going to feel — especially if 2021 will bring us another online edition of the World Series of Poker.

GGPoker MI: No Sorry, no GGPoker games for players in Michigan.

While we wouldn't be surprised to see the GGPoker brand launch and grow in popularity in the United States sometimes soon, we know this isn't going to start in Michigan.

The up-and-coming poker site that changed online poker in 2020 with the launch of the online World Series of Poker and lots of innovative features is quieter than quiet when it comes to their U.S. plans.

GGpoker is not on the list of the upcoming MI poker sites and is not active in any other American state.

Other Applicants

The list of applicants interested in securing a Michigan gaming license includes more names that might sound familiar to poker players.

None of these, however, seem to be interested in launching an online poker site in the state.

William Hill applied for a license via a company named American Wagering Inc. and it is expected to launch an online sportsbook as part of the group's expansion in the United States.

Betfair applied for a license via the Betfair Interactive US LLC and is expected to enter the market with an online sportsbook.

The list of other notable applicants includes also the likes of DraftKings, SugarHouse, Barstool, BetMGM, and Scientific Games.

One of the biggest processed food industries in the U.S. gets a comprehensive and hard hitting look in BIG KIBBLE: Hidden Dangers of the Commercial Pet Food Industry and How to Do Better by Our Dogs, by two leaders of the fresh, whole food movement for pets, Shawn Buckley and Dr. Oscar E. Chavez. Set to be published Dec. 1st by St. Martin’s Press, the book offers an inside look at the shocking lack of regulation within the pet food industry, and how readers can dramatically improve the quality of their dogs’ lives through diet. ffc

The commercial pet food industry—Big Kibble—is big business: $75 billion globally. A handful of multinational corporations dominate the industry and own just about every major dog food brand. This comes as a surprise to most people, but even more shocking is how lax the regulations are around these products. The guidelines—or lack thereof—for pet food production are set by a private, non-profit organization that is heavily influenced by the corporations that sell it, allowing them to include ever-cheaper ingredients, and create ever-larger earnings. Therefore, legal ingredients that could be in kibble include poultry feces, saw dust, expired food, and diseased meat, among other horrors. Many veterinarians still don’t know that kibble is not the best food for dogs, because Big Kibble invests substantially in marketing to veterinarians, education and research. So far, these corporations have been able to get away with it—until now.

BIG KIBBLE has received early praise from celebrities and prominent veterinary and medical professionals. Actress Kristin Davis says, “BIG KIBBLE is a must read for anyone who loves their pup...” Actress Amanda Seyfried says, “If like me you believe that your pets are members of the family you have to read BIG KIBBLE.” Of Buckley and Chavez, actress Kristen Bell says, “I’m so happy they now have a book to help spread awareness and information on how to improve animals’ lives.” FFC Commercial

In 2010 Buckley and Chavez started JustFoodForDogs, the pioneering company offering fresh, whole food for pets, made with only human-edible meats and produce. In BIG KIBBLE, they reveal that abandoning the junk that’s in kibble or cans can dramatically improve a dog’s health, behavior and happiness.
